Interestingly for the lowest peak on the list and the smallest country reconsidered by the UN - the Vatican city actually has no less than three claims to its' high point.
Quick Summary
• Starting point - St. Peters Square
• Route taken - Tourist route
• Total ascent - 60 m
• Total length - Minimal
• Total time for climb - 1 hour (ques)
• Expense category - #Low
• Equipment - #None
• Difficulty - #Level1 of 5
• Enjoyment - #1star of 5*
One being the publicly accessible viewing platform at the top St Peters Dome. The other being a spot in the private gardens of the Vatican. Then the third less convincing one being the diplomatic residence at Castel Gandolfo.

In my judgment, I had opted for the top of Saint Peters dome for the most logical high point. Even though man-made objects are usually excluded, the domes' viewing platform actually gives the real feeling of being at top of the Holy Sea by overlooking the plaza and surroundings.
It is the only object to really ascend at all and there are 551 stairs to the top.

However, like Malta, Rome would be another quick stopover as we had another plane booked to Sofia the following morning which we had only managed to get on because of a delay after not checking what airport we were flying from.
